Mexican Folk Art Nichos

This year, every grade “traveled” to Mexico and created one project inspired by Mexican art and culture. One of my favorites were these Mexican folk art nichos created by 8th graders.
Students watched a brief presentation and video about Mexico and Day of the Dead. We also looked at tons of pictures of Mexican folk art nichos. The students had the option of making a cross, heart, or sugar skull to use as their centerpiece. They were then allowed to decorate their boxes however they wanted to.

For this project, we used recycled cardboard, acrylic paint, beads, glitter, and gold foil cut-outs.
